Moura
Moura is a small vibrant country town servicing the surrounding rural and coalmining interests. On route to Carnarvon Gorge and National Park ‘The Coal and Cattle Centre of the Dawson Valley', Moura is located 200 kilometres south west of Rockhampton, 192 km west of Gladstone and 65km from the Banana Shire capital Biloela. Settled in the early 1930's, the town was established to serve the local cattle and grain industries, although Moura's significant economic boost arrived in the 1950's when BHP began coal mining operations about 5km east of the town.
Moura is a major cattle centre and also produces coal, cotton and grain. With a population of approximately 1980 Moura is the home of the Moura Coal Mine and has the second largest Grain Depot in Queensland. Also located in Moura are the Queensland Cotton Gin, Queensland Nitrates Ammonium Nitrate Plant, Coal Bed methane Gasses and Origin Energy.
